Context-Sensitive Design for Local Governments
This one-day workshop is a modification of
the three-day context sensitive design course offered to Mn/DOT
employees. The class will discuss many of the non-transportation-related
issues that arise due to different factors when working on transportation
projects.

Mail or fax your registration or register online no later than one week
prior to the program. Preregistration allows us to contact you if the
workshop must be postponed due to weather or other factors. A refund of
the registration fee, minus a $30 cancellation fee, will be made if
written cancellation is received at least five working days before the
workshop. Disability accommodations will be provided upon request.

Topics Covered
- Identifying the elements that make up a project's context,
including physical, environmental, social, cultural, land use,
and transportation factors
- How to involve local communities and other stakeholders in the
project development process
- Creative design using the flexibility inherent in design guidelines
and standards to fit a project to its context
- Incorporating aesthetics and landscaping as an integral part
of the design
- Accommodating pedestrians and bicyclists in the design
- Documenting design commitments so that they are actually constructed
- Seeking a variance, if necessary, and creating the appropriate
documentation
- Achieving an appropriate balance between transportation objectives
and community and environmental objectives
Who Should Attend
Local transportation agency personnel, including those with work related
to state-aid projects.
Credit
- 1.0 Roads Scholar Program elective credit
- To the best of our knowledge, this course/activity meets the continuing education requirements for 6.0 PDHs as outlined in Minnesota Statute 326.107. More information concerning continuing education for professionals is online at www.aelslagid.state.mn.us.
Instructor(s)
Frank Peloubet has more than 20 years of experience in sanitary engineering and water-related areas. His background includes 10 years as a wastewater and storm water utility manger, plus experience with the North Dakota environmental regulatory agency. Peloubet has worked on municipal and county drainage projects with a local engineering consulting firm to design culvert installations, and has taught water- and transportation- related courses. He is a graduate of North Dakota State University.
