Pavement design involves the determination of the most cost-effective combination of pavement type and structure for a roadway, which will be functionally and structurally adequate during the design life of the pavement. Consideration of the traffic conditions, environmental conditions, availability of materials, and material properties are required for an adequate design, while at the same time ensuring the constructability and maintainability of the designed pavement.
The purpose of this Web tool is to assist the engineering community in the design of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. This website will also direct the user to results provided within The Best Practices for the Design and Construction of Low Volume Roads, LRRB Report 2002-17REV. In addition to this online resource, several training opportunities are listed below.
The Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) provides workshops to educate the engineering community with best practices in the design and construction of city streets and county highways.
