Work-Zone Safety Training Program

MnLTAP's work-zone safety training program, upgraded in early 2024, includes both in-person and online training opportunities. These offerings are designed to improve work-zone safety for local agency staff at all levels, from seasonal employees to supervisors.

Some trainings are eligible for Roads Scholar Program credit. See the individual training pages for details.

Work-Zone Safety Orientation Online Course

This free online course, available anytime, offers a convenient opportunity for beginning, seasonal, and temporary construction, maintenance, and utility staff to learn about the fundamentals of work-zone safety before arriving at the job site. The course addresses many of the hazards inherent in road and street work and outlines how these dangers can be minimized to keep motorists, pedestrians, and employees safe.

Please note: This course is a recommended, but not required, prerequisite to our other work-zone trainings.

New! Introduction to the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual for Highway Workers Webinar Series

This five-webinar series, originally broadcast in February and March 2024, introduces highway workers to the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual and explains how to apply its concepts and standards in order to provide appropriate temporary traffic controls for their work zones. Recordings of all five webinars are available.

New! Work-Zone Safety Overview for Managers and Lead Workers

This two-hour in-person workshop provides an overview of basic traffic control and safety procedures for short-term work zones. Participants will review the latest traffic control devices and safety devices, including several unique approaches to traffic control and methods for reducing risk and liability. The training is intended for supervisors and managers responsible for providing guidance for work-zone traffic control, temporary traffic control devices, or policies and procedures related to work-zone traffic control and safety.

Coming soon! How to Survive a Visit to a Highway Construction Zone

This workshop will review the fundamentals of work-zone safety for highway construction zone visitors before they arrive at the job site. It will address many of the hazards inherent in road and street work, instruct visitors on how and where to park, explain what high-visibility garments are required, discuss how to be aware of equipment and operations, and outline how dangers can be minimized to stay safe. Coming soon! On-Demand Training: Temporary Traffic Control Application and Safety Classroom Training for Highway Workers

Our instructor will bring this on-demand, onsite classroom training to your agency and tailor it to meet your needs. The training will build off the principles presented in the Introduction to the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual for Highway Workers Webinar Series, engaging students though group discussions and exercises that pertain to their daily work and traffic control needs. The instructor will also augment the course with agency policies and procedures.

A pilot version of the training is being offered in March 2024. More information about the training—and how to request it at your agency—will be available soon.
